Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injections for Hair Loss

Are you one of the 35 million males or 21 million women in the United States that suffers from hair loss? Let’s talk about a minimally invasive and cost-effective treatment. You might have heard of PRP for sports injuries or even facials (i.e. Vampire facial), but have you heard of the added benefits it has for hair loss? Yes, we use PRP for hair restoration as well.

To understand how PRP works for hair loss, we need to explain what PRP is first. PRP is Platelet Rich Plasma, also known as liquid gold, which is a portion of your whole blood that is made of components of plasma and platelets. It’s the platelets that contain cytokines and growth factors that trigger cell reproduction and tissue regeneration.

By injecting PRP into specific treatment areas, it helps hair follicles go into an active growth phase by stimulating inactive hair follicles. This helps your body to start a reactivation of the natural hair growth cycle which can result in thicker hair follicles, fuller hair, more hair follicles, stronger hair, less breakage, and faster hair growth.

For us to do a PRP treatment, we will need to draw a small sample of blood. Once we draw the blood, it is placed in a centrifuge which will spin your blood causing it to separate into 2 components, PRP and RBC (red blood cells). Drawing out Platelet Rich Plasma into syringes, we are then able to inject it into the specific treatment area of your scalp.

The treatment usually takes one hour and has minimal side effects. The most common side effects would be swelling, soreness, and bruising at the injection site. Most clients will see results within a course of several months and usually require between 3-4 treatments that are spaced out a month apart.

Ideal candidates for PRP hair restoration would be males and women with early stages of hair loss which involves thinning hair and a receding hair line. If you may not be a candidate if you have stage 5 or greater hair loss, a scalp infection, skin cancer, low platelets, active chemotherapy, or active thyroid imbalance.
